Lokaratna is the official journal of Folklore Foundation , which is located in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. Folklore Foundation works for the promotion of folklore in public domain and to conduct quality research. Anyone from any discipline can become the member of Folklore Foundation by writing to us. The aim of the Foundation is to disseminate folklore of Orissa for wider communication across the state and across the globe. LOKARATNA, the name of the journal is given in memory of Dr Kunja Bihari Dash who was the pioneering folklorist of Orissa popularly known as Lokaratna. Literary meaning of Lokaratna is gem of the people; here the gem is the oral tradition that is created by the people through their oral expression. The words of such oral tradition is called ratna or mukta which is compared to a precious gem stone. Thus Lokaratna is the creation of people shared and perpetuated across the ages. We are a group of scholars interested in study of multidimensional aspects of Orisan culture and have assembled in a platform to promote scholarly work on folklore.

Orissa is a rich land of folklore, and its creative expression is found in its cultural context, with social function, purpose and meaning. Folklore in Orissa is as lively as the society wish to be. Orissa is also a land of sixty two indigenous communities with their distinct etholinguistic and cuitural landscape. The epistemology of space and power is perceived from its nature and culture in a web of symbiosis, than disjointed one. Therefore life in Orissa is more close to the nature than any thing else.

The objectives of the journal are

  1. To invite writers , scholars to contribute their valuable research paper on any aspect of Orissan folklore either in English or in Oriya. This should be based on theory and method of folklore research and on empirical study with substantial field work.
  2. To publish seminal articles written by the senior scholars of Orissa on Oriya Folklore( to make them available from the original sources)
  3. To present lives of a folklorists outlining their substantial contribution to Orissan folklore
  4. To publish Book Reviews, Field work reports, descriptions of research projects, and announcements for seminars and workshops.
  5. To present interviews with eminent folklorists in India and abroad

Any new idea that would enrich this folklore research journal is welcome.

We have planned to bring out the journal bimonthly basis for the first six months and once we have ample folklore resources we will come out with the monthly journal. Scholars from across the country and globe with scholarship on Orissan folklore may contribute to LOKARATNA.
